Background: Body weight could be classified into underweight, normal weight and overweight according to percentage of body fat (%BF), and normal weight obesity (NWO) is defined as a normal BMI but a high %BF. While the impact of NWO in women fecundity remain unknow. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the associations between %BF and reproductive outcomes among in vitro fertilization (IVF) women with normal BMI. Methods: A total of 469 women were included in this study and were classified into low %BF, normal %BF and high %BF according to previous study. Multivariate generalized regression models were employed to evaluate the associations of %BF with ovarian reserve parameters, IVF outcomes and early pregnancy outcomes. We further run sensitivity analyses by restricted the analysis to young women and those only with tubal factor, respectively. Results: About 32.2% of normal BMI women were misclassified according %BF, with 16.4% of them were low %BF and 15.8% were high %BF. The high %BF group had significantly lower antral follicle count (AFC) than normal %BF groups, and the AFC showed a tendency of decrease as %BF increased. In sensitivity analysis in young women, high %BF group also had significantly lower number of good-quality embryos when compared to normal %BF groups. The results expanded to all IVF outcomes when analysis restricted to tubal factor women. Conclusion: In summary, misclassifications of body weight status based on BMI are common according to %BF, and NWO is associated with adverse reproductive outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has become the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal failure in most developed and many developing countries. Strategies aimed at identifying potential modifiable risk factors for DKD are urgently needed. Here, we investigated the association between clusters of body fat and nutritional parameters with DKD in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 184 participants with T2DM. Biochemical parameters including fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, hemoglobin, albumin, creatinine, and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) were measured. The data for percentage of body fat mass (PBF), visceral fat area (VFA), phase angle at 50 kHz (PA50), and body cell mass (BCM) were obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). DKD was diagnosed by UACR and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Factor analysis was used for dimensionality reduction clustering among variables. The association of clusters with the presence of DKD was assessed using binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Factor analysis identified two clusters which were interpreted as a body fat cluster with positive loadings of VFA, body mass index, waist circumstance, and PBF and a nutritional parameters cluster with positive loadings of PA50, hemoglobin, BCM, and albumin. Participants were divided into the four groups based on the sex-specific cutoff value (median) of each cluster score calculated using the cluster weights and the original variable values. Only participants with high body fat and poor nutritional parameters (OR 3.43, 95% CI 1.25-9.42) were associated with increased odds of having DKD. CONCLUSION: Body fat and nutritional parameters were strongly associated with and considerably contributed to the presence of DKD, suggesting that body fat and nutrition might be promising markers representing metabolic state in pathogenesis of DKD and clinical utility of BIA might provide valuable recommendations to patients with T2DM.

Objectives: Body composition (BC) analysis is a routine part of comprehensive public health care. Assessment of BC is more important source of information than BMI. Adherence to the standard measurement conditions is essential for the correct results. Our study aimed to examine the effect of acute fluid consumption on measures of body mass (BM), percentage of body fat (%BF), visceral fat (VF), percentage of body water (%BW), and impedance at 100 kHz (I100) and 20 kHz (I20) using segmental multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (SMF-BIA) in a general healthy population. Methods: 95 consecutive healthy normal-weight adults (42 men; 53 women) were involved in the study (mean ± s.d.; age 23.9±1.6 years; body mass 68.3±14.1 kg). All subjects underwent two separate series of body composition (BC) measurements at 0 (BASELINE), 30, 60, 90 min (POST): the first series after drinking 600 ml of isotonic carbohydrate/electrolyte drink (IST) and the second after no fluid administration (CON). Individual measurements were performed in the morning on two consecutive days. Results: In the IST group, BM, VF (both P<0.001), and %BF (P<0.05) increased significantly at 30 min POST compared to BASELINE. BM and VF remained elevated at 90 min POST (both P<0.001). %BW decreased significantly at 30 min POST (P<0.01) then increased at 60 min (P<0.001) and 90 min (P<0.01) POST. There were no significant changes in I100. I20 increased significantly at 30 min POST (P<0.001) then decreased at 60 min (P<0.001) and 90 min POST (P<0.01) compared to BASELINE. In the CON group, BM and VF decreased below BASELINE at 90 min POST (P<0.001), %BF, %BW and I100 did not change significantly. The difference between IST and CON was statistically significant for all POST measurement times only in BM and VF (both P<0.001). The VF results are also underlined by the detected impedance changes in the trunk area at 20 kHz (B20) and 100 kHz (B100) at 60 min and 90 min (both P<0.001). Conclusions: Our study suggests that segmental impedances and BC measurement in healthy young normal-weight adults requires strict adherence to fluid restriction at least 90 min before the measurement to avoid false impedance values and overestimation of BM and VF.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) in determining obesity in Chinese children aged 6-9 years, using the criteria of percentage of body fat (PBF) and body mass index z-scores (BMI-Z). Methods: The cross-sectional study included 5365 children, aged 6-9 years, who participated in the project survey "Group prevention and treatment of obesity among students and school health promotion in Shanghai" from September 2007 to September 2009. Height, weight, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), TMI, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and PBF were recorded. Statistical analyses including Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, chi-square test, receiver operating characteristics curve, and kappa chi-square test were performed. Results: TMI for both sexes was relatively constant with increasing age, and statistically significant differences were not observed at some ages (P > 0.05 at 6, 7, 8, and 9 years). WHtR showed subtle changes, while BMI and PBF increased significantly with age in boys and girls (P < 0.01). Using BMI-Z criteria as the measure of general obesity, the results indicated that TMI cutoff values for 6-9 years were 14.60 kg/m3 for boys and 14.84 kg/m3 for girls (P < 0.001). Analysis of the agreement between TMI and BMI-Z showed that the kappa statistic was 0.826 in boys and 0.709 in girls (P < 0.001). Conclusion: TMI, as a constant tool, holds great potential as an alternative screening method for identifying children aged 6-9 years who may be at risk of obesity at an early stage.

Objectives: We aim to compare the efficacies of the bioelectrical indices (percentage of body fat, PBF; visceral fat area, VFA) with the conventional anthropometric measures (body mass index, BMI; waist-hip ratio, WHR) for predicting type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk by sex and to determine the sex-specific optimal adiposity indices to predict the T2D risk. Design: Cross-sectional design. Setting: Tianjin First Central Hospital and Tianjin Union Medical Center, Tianjin, China. Participants: A total of 9,332 adults (41.35% men) undergoing physical examination. Primary and secondary outcome measures: T2D was defined using the WHO's criteria: fasting blood glucose (FBG) ≥7.0 mmol/L and/or previous diagnosis of T2D. Height, weight, waist, hip, PBF, VFA, and fasting plasma glucose were measured. Results: All studied adiposity indices were associated with T2D among both males and females, and the observed associations differed by sex. The standardized aORs of BMI, WHR, PBF and VFA for T2D were 1.60 (95% CI 1.42-1.81), 1.43 (95% CI 1.25-1.64), 1.42 (95% CI 1.23-1.62) and 1.53 (95% CI 1.35-1.75) for females, and 1.47 (95% CI 1.31-1.66), 1.40 (95% CI 1.25-1.58), 1.54 (95% CI 1.36-1.74) and 1.47 (95% CI 1.31-1.65) for males, respectively. The AUCs of VFA, WHR and BMI were 0.743, 0.742 and 0.717 in women, respectively, whereas none of the indices had AUC larger than 0.70 in men. The AUCs were not significantly different between VFA and WHR, while both demonstrate larger AUCs than BMI and PBF in females (all p < 0.05). The optimal cutoff values of VFA, WHR, and BMI for T2D in women were 103.55 cm2, 0.905, and 24.15 kg/m2, respectively. Conclusion: Although BMI, WHR, and PBF and VFA as measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) were all positively associated with T2D, their efficacy for predicting the risk of T2D differed by sex. VFA, WHR and BMI could be used as biomarkers to predict T2D risk in women, however none of the study indicators demonstrated favorable efficacy of predicting T2D risk in men.

Introduction: Hypertension is an emerging health concern among children owing to its increasing prevalence and association with obesity. However, hypertension screening is uncommon, and childhood hypertension-related data are limited. This cross-sectional study determined the prevalence and associated factors of hypertension among primary school children in Kuching, Sarawak. Method: Standard procedures and validated equipment were used to measure blood pressure and anthropometric indicators. The body mass index (BMI)-for-age and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were calculated. Questionnaires were used to obtain family sociodemographic data and health history. Results: A total of 1,314 children aged 6-12 years were enrolled, of whom 107 (8.1%) and 178 (13.5%) were hypertensive and pre-hypertensive, respectively. The chi-squared test indicated that hypertension was significantly associated with male sex (P<0.05), >1 standard deviation BMI-for-age (P<0.001), percentage of excess body fat (BF)(P<0.001), 5th to 95th height percentile (P<0.001), >90th excess waist circumference (WC) percentile (P<0.001), >90th WHtR percentile (P<0.001), clerical, service, sales and skilled parental work (P<0.05), excess weight (P<0.05) and cardiovascular disease (P<0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the percentage of excess BF [odds ratio (OR): 4.84, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.01-11.66] and excess WC (OR: 2.33, 95% CI: 1.15-4.72) were significantly related to hypertension after adjusting for sex and age. Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension among the study population is higher than that among children worldwide. Childhood hypertension-related factors must be identified to aid in routine blood pressure screening, which is crucial for early detection and intervention to reduce future morbidity burden.

Purpose: Research on the relationship between sleep duration and obesity defined using multiple anthropometric and bioelectrical indices in women remains scarce. We aimed to explore the association between sleep duration and body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), body fat percentage (PBF) and visceral fat area (VFA) among females. Methods: We recruited women for medical examination using multistage cluster sampling. Sleep was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and sleep duration was categorized into short (<7 h), optimal (7 <9 h) and long sleep (≥ 9 h). Weight and height were measured using a calibrated stadiometer. Waist circumference was manually measured. PBF, and VFA were estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle factors were also collected and included in the logistic regression models to explore the independent association between sleep duration and obesity defined by different indices. Results: A total of 7,763 women with a mean age of 42.6 ± 13.5 years were included. The percentage of women reporting short and long sleep was 10.3 and 13.4% respectively. The mean BMI, WHR, PBF and VFA were 23.07 ± 3.30 kg/m2, 0.78 ± 0.06, 32.23 ± 6.08% and 91.64 ± 35.97cm2, respectively. Short sleep was independently associated with 35% (95% CI: 1.05-1.75) increased odds of general obesity (BMI ≥ 28 kg/cm2), and long sleep was associated with 18% (95% CI: 1.01-1.37) increased odds of visceral obesity (VFA > 100 cm2). No association was observed between sleep deprivation or excessive sleep and high WHR or high PBF. Conclusion: In women, short sleep was associated with an increased odds of general obesity, whereas long sleep was associated with an increased odds of visceral obesity. Longitudinal observations are needed to confirm this cross-sectional relationship.

Sedentary lifestyle and consumption of high-fat foods have become widespread, especially in the urban population. This leads to a reduction in lean body mass and increased body fat. The correlation between body fat indices and low back pain has been less explored and documented. The aim of this study was to identify the correlation between the percentage of body fat, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio and abdominal muscle strength. Percentage of body fat was estimated by using the body composition analyzer method using Tanita BC-545 Innerscan Segmental Body Composition. Waist-to-hip ratio was calculated by dividing the waist circumference by hip circumference. Abdominal muscle (rectus abdominis and external oblique) strength was measured by maximum voluntary isometric contraction as measured by surface electromyography. A positive correlation was observed between waist circumference and the percentage of body fat, while a negative correlation was observed between the average maximum voluntary isometric contraction of rectus abdominis and external oblique muscles and the percentage of body fat. Individuals with a high percentage of body fat tend to have higher fat distribution over the abdominal region and decreased abdominal muscle strength. Therapists should emphasize the use of abdominal muscles in individuals with high body fat in order to reduce the associated risk of the development of poor posture and low back pain.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the association between fat mass to lean body mass ratio (RFL), percentage of body fat (PBF), and fat mass (FM) with mortality among middle-aged and elderly cancer patients without obesity. Methods: This prospective hospital-based cohort study comprised 3,201 patients with stage I to IV cancer aged 40 years or above (mean age: 58 years for female patients and 61 years for male patients; mean length of follow-up was 1.67 years; the maximal follow-up length was 6.42 years). FM and PBF were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Cox proportional hazard models were used, and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated. Results: We revealed a significant association between RFL and all-cause mortality among men aged ≥60 years after adjusting for confounders. Compared with those in the lowest tertile of RFL, elderly men in the medium and highest tertile had a 35 and 34% lower hazard of death from any cause, respectively. After additionally adjusted for C-reaction protein (CRP), HRs of medium and high tertile of RFL became short of statistical significance [medium tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 0.74 (0.46, 1.20); highest tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 0.84 (0.53, 1.33)]. Among elderly women, RFL was significantly related to all-cause mortality only when the additional adjustment for CRP [medium tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 2.08 (1.08, 4.01); highest tertile: adjusted HRs (95% CI) = 0.90 (0.45, 1.81)]. No significant association between RFL and all-cause mortality was observed among female participants or male participants aged less than 60 years. Conclusion: Our findings showed a significant non-linear association between RFL and all-cause mortality, which was observed only in elderly men, and might be attenuated by their inflammation state.

Resumen Introducción: La obesidad infantil es un problema global de salud pública. Una de las causas subyacentes de este evento complejo y multicausal se relaciona con la alta ingesta de energía. El uso inadecuado de suplementos dietarios podría superar los requerimientos de energía y nutrientes y generar una ganancia excesiva de peso corporal en los niños. Objetivo: Describir el tipo, cantidad y frecuencia de consumo de suplementos dietarios ingeridos por niños y niñas durante la edad preescolar, y evaluar la correlación entre este consumo y la composición corporal de los mismos en la edad escolar. Metodología: Estudio de corte transversal analítico. Estudio piloto realizado en niños en edad escolar de Bucaramanga, Colombia. Variables dependientes: porcentaje de grasa corporal y masa músculo esquelética. Principal variable independiente: consumo de suplementos dietarios. La correlación entre variables fue evaluada usando el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman (rho). Resultados: La prevalencia del consumo de suplementos dietarios en algún momento, antes de los cinco años, fue de 51,11% (IC 95%, 0,35 a 0,66). Las formas de presentación usadas con mayor frecuencia fueron en polvo, granulado y líquido. Los tipos de suplementos utilizados correspondieron a fórmulas poliméricas (40,91%), seguidos por aceite de hígado de bacalao (36,36%). A mayor consumo de suplementos dietarios, se observó mayor porcentaje de grasa corporal (rho = 0,346) y menores valores de masa muscular esquelética (rho = -0,286). Sin embargo, estas correlaciones no fueron estadísticamente significativas (p = 0,114 y p = 0,286, respectivamente). Conclusión: Este estudio encontró una correlación débil y positiva entre el consumo de suplementos dietarios en la primera infancia y el porcentaje de grasa corporal y una correlación débil y negativa con la masa músculo esquelética; sin embargo, no hubo significancia estadística. Es necesario continuar investigando acerca de potenciales efectos no deseados del consumo inadecuado de suplementos durante la primera infancia.


Abstract Introduction: Childhood obesity is a global public health problem. One of the underlying causes of this complex and multicausal event is related to high energy intake. Inappropriate use of dietary supplements could exceed energy and nutrient requirements resulting in excessive body weight gain in children. Objective: To describe the type, quantity and frequency of consumption of dietary supplements ingested by boys and girls during preschool age and to evaluate the correlation between this consumption and their body composition at school age. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study. Pilot study, carried out in school children from Bucaramanga, Colombia. Dependent variables: body fat percentage and skeletal muscle mass. Main independent variable: consumption of dietary supplements. The correlation between variables was evaluated using Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho). Results: The prevalence of consumption of dietary supplements at some point before the age of five was 51.11% (95% CI, 0.35 to 0.66). The most frequently used forms of presentation were powder, granules and liquid. The types of supplements used corresponded to polymeric formulas (40.91%), followed by cod liver oil (36.36%). A higher consumption of dietary supplements showed a higher percentage of body fat (rho=0.346) and lower values of skeletal muscle mass (rho= -0.286). However, these correlations were not statistically significant (p=0.114 and p=0.286, respectively). Conclusion: This study found a weak positive correlation between dietary supplement use in early childhood and body fat percentage and a weak negative correlation with skeletal muscle mass; however, there was no statistical significance. Further research is needed on the potential undesirable effects of inappropriate supplement use in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between sleep duration and anthropometric indices are still unclear. This study aimed to explore the association between sleep duration and body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (PBF) and visceral fat area (VFA) among Chinese adults, further to explore gender difference in it. METHODS: We analyzed part of the baseline data of a cohort study among adult attendees at two health-screening centers in China. Sleep duration was self-reported and categorized into short (< 7 h/day), optimal (7-9 h/day) and long sleep (≥ 9 h/day). BMI, PBF and VFA were assessed by bioelectric impedance analysis. Demographic characteristics, chronic diseases and medication history, physical activity, smoking and alcohol drinking behaviors were measured by an investigator-administrated questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 9059 adult participants (63.08% were females) were included in the analysis. The participants aged from 19 to 91 years with the mean age of 45.0 ± 14.6 years. Short sleep was independently associated with elevated odds of general obesity (defined using BMI) and visceral obesity (defined using VFA) among the total study population, and gender differences were observed in these associations. Among women, short sleep was associated with 62% increased odds of general obesity (OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.24-2.12) and 22% increased odds of visceral obesity (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.02-1.45). Among men, long sleep duration was associated with 21% decreased odds of visceral obesity (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.64-0.99). No association was observed between sleep duration and PBF in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: Sleep duration was associated with increased odds of general and visceral obesity, and this association differed between men and women. No association was observed between sleep duration and PBF among either males or females.

BACKGROUND: A relationship between adiposity and asthma has been described in some cohort studies, but little is known about trajectories of adiposity throughout early childhood among children at high risk for developing asthma in urban United States cities. Moreover, early life trajectories of adipokines that have metabolic and immunologic properties have not been comprehensively investigated. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to characterize trajectories of adiposity in a longitudinal birth cohort of predominately Black and Latinx children (n = 418) using several different repeated measures including body mass index (BMI) z score, bioimpedance analysis, leptin, and adiponectin in the first 10 years of life. METHODS: In a longitudinal birth cohort of predominately Black and Latinx children, we used repeated annual measures of BMI, bioimpedance analysis (ie, percentage of body fat), leptin, and adiponectin to create trajectories across the first 10 years of life. Across those trajectories, we compared asthma diagnosis and multiple lung function outcomes, including spirometry, impulse oscillometry, and methacholine response. RESULTS: Three trajectories were observed for BMI z score, bioimpedance analysis, and leptin and 2 for adiponectin. There was no association between trajectories of BMI, percentage of body fat, leptin, or adipokine and asthma diagnosis or lung function (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Trajectories of adiposity were not associated with asthma or lung function in children at high risk for developing asthma. Risk factors related to geography as well as social and demographic factors unique to specific populations could explain the lack of association and should be considered in obesity and asthma studies.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have compared bioelectrical body and visceral fat indices with anthropometric measures, or evaluated their optimal cutoffs in relation to hypertension among Asians. We compared the efficiencies of bioelectrical indices (percentage of body fat, PBF; visceral fat area, VFA) with anthropometric measures (body mass index, BMI; waist-hip ratio, WHR) for hypertension and re-evaluated the optimal cutoffs of each index by age and gender. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 8234 adults for health examination. PBF, VFA, BMI, WHR, and data on hypertension and behaviors were collected. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and areas under curves (AUCs) were used to analyze the efficiencies of the indices for hypertension, optimal cutoffs were estimated using the Youden index. RESULTS: A total of 8234 individuals aged 21-91 with median age 44 (interquartile range [IQR] 33-56) years were included and 40.56% were men. The overall prevalence of hypertension was 27.47%. The studied indices were all associated with hypertension in all age-specific groups both among men and women except for WHR in 21-29 years old men and PBF in in 21-29 years old women. Among males, there were no statistical differences in powers of four indices for hypertension in all age-specific groups, except for 40-49 years, in which WHR was better than VFA. Among females, no differences were found among the indices in 30-39 and 70-79 years groups, while WHR was the best in 21-29 years group, VFA was better than PBF in 30-39 and 50-59 years groups, BMI was better than PBF and WHR in 60-69 years group. The optimal cutoffs of PBF, VFA, BMI and WHR ranged from 23.9 to 28.7%, 86.4 to 106.9cm2, 23.5 to 27.1 kg/m2, 0.92 to 0.96 across the age categories in males, and 32.8 to 36.3%, 75.9 to 130.9cm2, 21.9 to 26.4 kg/m2, 0.84 to 0.95 across the age categories in females, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The obesity indices' efficiencies for hypertension varied by age and gender, and their cutoff values varied across the age categories and gender. Specific indices and cutoffs based on person's age and gender should be used to identify individuals with hypertension.

Whether a body mass derived from extremes of body weight is beneficial to bone remains controversial. When fat accumulation reaches excessive levels and induces changes in hormonal factors and adipokines, it may affect bone accrual during growth. This study evaluated the relationships between body composition and key biomarkers in relation to bone and fat metabolism in obese Thai boys and girls. Subjects aged 12-14 years were grouped by body mass index (BMI) and percentage of body fat (%Fat). Body composition and heel bone Z-score and speed of sound (SOS) were assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis and calcaneus bone densitometry, respectively. Serum osteocalcin (OC), adiponectin, leptin, insulin, and 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) were measured by ELISA. Their correlations were analyzed and compared between sexes. The results showed that the obese groups had no differences in mean BMIs and body composition, except that boys had more muscle mass than girls. Boys had lower serum OC and leptin levels than girls. Positive correlations of leptin with %Fat and FM were found in both sexes, while positive associations of %Fat with OC and insulin were found only in boys. Bone Z-score and SOS positively correlated with OC in boys but negatively correlated with 25(OH)D in girls. When classifying the obese group using %Fat ≥25, the positive correlations between %Fat and insulin and the negative associations between %Fat and adiponectin in girls were more pronounced. These results suggest that the associations of body fat and bone parameters with OC, adiponectin, 25(OH)D, and insulin were sex-specific, with greater clarity when %Fat was used instead of BMI to classify obesity.

Studies suggest that telomere lengths, a biomarker of aging, could also capture the physiological weathering attributable to poor health behaviors and adverse experiences, particularly those experienced in early life. For these reasons, we propose that telomere lengths may be a pivotal biomarker for measuring the heightened susceptibility to illness resulting from the cumulative exposure to acculturation to the US culture. This binational study used an Actor-Partner Interdependence Model to test if maternal acculturation to the US moderates the cross-sectional associations of telomere lengths with percentage of body fat (PBF) among Mexican women, among their children, and the intergenerational associations of mother and children telomere lengths with each other's PBF. Low income Mexican child-mother dyads (n â€‹= â€‹108 dyads) were recruited to participate in this cross-sectional study in Mexico and the US. The pooled dataset included measurements of maternal acculturation to the US, mother and children's salivary telomere lengths, PBF measured through bioelectrical impedance, and demographic characteristics. Results showed that the influences of maternal acculturation in the associations of telomere lengths with PBF were different for mothers and their children: Among mothers with higher maternal acculturation to the US, longer salivary telomere lengths were associated with lower PBF. In contrast, among mothers with lower maternal acculturation to the US, salivary telomere lengths were not associated with PBF. There were no significant associations between children's salivary telomere lengths and PBF, and the null associations did not vary across different levels of maternal acculturation to the US. Future longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether acculturation to the US (experienced through immigration or remotely) influences the association of telomere length attrition with obesity risks among immigrant and non-immigrant Mexican children and adults.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of clarity as to which obesity parameters may be more important in the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRF). AIM: To verify the mediating role of different obesity parameters on the association between CRF and CMRF in normal weight and overweight/obese children and adolescents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 999 children and adolescents (534 boys) aged 7-14 years from the south of Brazil. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and percentage of body fat were assessed. Participants were classified as normal weight, overweight and obese according to BMI. CRF was evaluated by the 6-minute run/walk test. . A continuous CMRF score was calculated by summing the Z-scores of the following variables: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides. Data analysis was performed using partial correlation and linear regression models. RESULTS: BMI, WC, WHtR and percentage of body fat mediated the relationship between CRF and CMRF in overweight/obese boys and girls but not those of normal weight. Additionally, the percentage of the influence of each obesity parameter was 20% for BMI and WC, 16% for percentage of body fat and 18% for WHtR in girls. For boys, the mediation effect was 25% for BMI, 26% for WC, 28% for percentage of body fat and 25% for WHtR. BACKGROUND: Indian babies are hypothesized to be born thin but fat. This has not been confirmed with precise measurements at birth. If it is true, it could track into later life and confer risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). OBJECTIVES: Primarily, to accurately measure percentage of body fat (%BF) and body cell mass (BCM) in Indian babies with normal birth weight, compare them across different gestational ages and sex, and test the hypothesis of the thin but fat phenotype in Indian babies. Secondarily, to examine the relation between body weight and body fat in Indian babies. METHODS: Term newborns (n = 156) weighing ≥2500 g, from middle socioeconomic status mothers were recruited in Bengaluru, India, and their anthropometry, %BF (air displacement plethysmography), and BCM (whole-body potassium counter) were measured. Maternal demography and anthropometry were recorded. The mean %BF and its dispersion were compared with earlier studies. The relation between newborn %BF and body weight was explored by regression analysis. RESULTS: Mean birth weight was 3.0 ± 0.3 kg, with mean %BF 9.8 ± 3.5%, which was comparable to pooled estimates of %BF from published studies (9.8%; 95% CI: 9.7, 10.0; P > 0.05). Appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) babies had higher %BF (1.8%) compared to small-for-gestational age (SGA) babies (P < 0.01). Mean %BCM of all babies at birth was 35.4 ± 10.5%; AGA babies had higher %BCM compared to SGA babies (7.0%, P < 0.05). Girls in comparison to boys had significantly higher %BF and lower %BCM. Body weight was positively associated with %BF. CONCLUSION: Indian babies with normal birth weight did not demonstrate the thin but fat phenotype. Body weight and fat had positive correlation, such that SGA babies did not show a preservation of their %BF. These findings will have relevance in planning optimal interventions during early childhood to prevent NCDs risk in adult life.

The aim was to investigate the possible association of dietary calcium intake with adiposity, insulin resistance, and adipocytokine values in adolescent boys. In this cross-sectional study, participants were 123 adolescent boys aged 13-15 years, who were divided into tertiles according to their dietary calcium intake. Dietary calcium intake was assessed using three 24 h dietary recalls. In addition, energy intake, body composition, physical activity (PA), and blood biochemical values were also measured. Mean body fat%, fat mass (FM), trunk FM, trunk fat%, and leptin differed between high and low tertiles of calcium intake after adjustment for age, pubertal stage, and PA. For the entire cohort, mean calcium intake was 786 ± 380 mg/day and was related to body mass index (BMI), FM, and trunk fat% but not to insulin resistance or adipocytokine values after adjusting for possible confounders. In addition, only 15.4% of the participants obtained or exceeded their mean dietary calcium intake requirements. These subjects who met their dietary calcium intake had significantly lower body fat% in comparison with subjects not meeting their dietary calcium intake. Odds ratio of being in the highest tertile of FM, trunk FM, and trunk fat% was 3.2-4.4 (95% confidence interval 1.19-12.47; p < 0.05) times higher for boys in low calcium intake tertile, compared to those boys in high calcium intake tertile. In conclusion, dietary calcium intake is inversely associated with total body and abdominal adiposity values in a specific group of healthy male adolescents with different body mass values.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the association between parental factors (overweight, history of hypertension, and education level) and children's blood pressure status. Further, we evaluated to what extent the potential association could be interpreted by children's adiposity indices. METHODS: The current study included 3316 Chinese school students (1579 girls and 1737 boys, aged 6-14 years) and their parents. Parents reported information on their height, body weight, history of hypertension, and the highest education level. Trained medical staff measured children's blood pressure, height, body weight, waist circumference (WC), and percentage of body fat (PBF, assessed by bio-impedance method). Z-score of all three indices were calculated and used in the analysis. We used generalized linear model to evaluate the association between parental information and z-score of children's blood pressure. Meditation analysis was used to evaluate the proportion contributed by z-score of children's adiposity indices (BMI, WC, and PBF). RESULTS: We found that parental overweight and hypertension, but not parental education level, were significantly associated with children's systolic and diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.05 for all). Approximately 30.4-92.2% of the association between these two parental factors and children's systolic blood pressure were mediated by children's adiposity indices, and 22.3-55.6% for children's diastolic blood pressure. The strongest meditative factor, among the three obesity indices, was children's BMI z-score. CONCLUSIONS: The association between parental factors and children's blood pressure was mainly mediated by children's adiposity indices.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We evaluated the association between parental obesity and their children's obesity parameters [e.g., percentage of body fat (PBF)] over time. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study included 2066 Chinese parents-children trios (n = 1001 girls and 1065 boys, aged 6-14 years). Children's height, weight, waist circumference (WC) and PBF (bioelectrical impedance analysis) were annually assessed from 2014 (baseline) to 2016. Information on parental height and body weight, and children's diet and physical activity was collected in 2014. The association between parental obesity and changes in their children's PBF during follow-up was analyzed using a mixed effects model. We also examined changes in children's BMI and WC in secondary analyses. Baseline mean BMI, WC, and PBF for children were 17.6 ± 3.5 kg/m2, 60.5 ± 9.6 cm, and 16.6 ± 6.5%, respectively. We observed that maternal, but not paternal, obesity was associated with a greater increase in children's PBF during the follow-up. An adjusted mean difference in annual increase of PBF was 0.41% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.01%, 0.84%] for children with obese mothers, compared with those with normal-weight mothers. Both maternal and paternal obesity was associated with a greater increase in their children's BMI and WC (p trend<0.01 for both); however, the associations were stronger in mother-children pairs than those in father-children pairs. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal obesity was associated with a greater increase in PBF in Chinese school-aged children.
